Our story starts out with Dottie, Jack’s Mom.
Dottie is a horse that has been a long time contributor to Project Stable, an equestrian program for special needs children. Every Saturday Dottie would do her best to help those less fortunate than us. Dottie came down with a foot problem and could not be used for the special need’s classes. In order for Dottie to earn her keep until she recovered, she was breed so the offspring could be sold. Dottie is a registered Appaloosa. After Dottie was breed the Vet determined that the breeding did not take.

Life went on as usual until the morning of Friday, May 14, 2010. At 8:00 am there was Jack in the stall with Dottie. What a surprise! Jacks body looked normal, but his nose was not right. Jack was born with a condition called Wry Mouth. Jack is a beautiful brown and white blanketed appaloosa colt. At first our research and the vet’s opinion was to put Jack down since he would not be able to feed himself and he looked disfigured. Further research led us to the University of Florida and an answer to Jacks dilemma. After speaking with the vet there and sending pictures, we found an expert in this field who has performed many successful operations of this type.

We have to wait until Jack is 4 months old to perform the operation. Right now Jack has to be bottle fed every three hours. Jack will be an inspiration to our Special Need’s students. They will be able to see how an imperfect horse like Jack can grow up to lead a normal life and be asset to our Community. We are now in the process of raising funds for Jack’s operation.

November 2010 Update
Currently we have to take Jack's temperature every 4 hours. When his temperature goes up he is given medication to control this. He still has the hole in his neck where the trac was, which has to be cleaned several times a day until it heals up. At all times he has to be monitored closely to watch for pneumonia, colitis and an irregular heart beat. In 2 weeks the staples and stitches have to be removed from his nose, this will be done locally.

The week of December 20th he has to return to the clinic for removal of screws and plates. We do not know what additional care he will need after that, it depends on his progress and what condition he is in when after his next visit to the clinic. He is expected to make a full recovery and his nose will look should look good when all the procedures are complete and the swelling subsides.

March 2011 Update
This is the latest up-date on Jack. Since we brought him home from the Medical Center in Ocala, his nose and jaw have healed. Both nostrils are working well and he now eats his hay and grain like a normal horse. His growth rate is normal. He is still experiencing an irregular heartbeat. The Vets are hoping he will grow out of this issue, but at some point he may have to go back to Ocala to have his heart shocked. Last week we had blood pulled and sent the lab results to the Vets in Ocala for them to evaluate.

When we started the process of saving Jack, the estimated cost was 5,000.00 to 6,000.00. Due to all the issues with infections and Jacks heart, the costs have far exceeded our estimate. Jack had to stay at the Medical Center almost a month longer than anticipated. To this point we have raised 9,600.00. The actual cost has been 16,600.00.

The local Vets have been helping us out by donating their time and the Medical Center in Ocala has given us a 10% discount on Jacks last stay. We would like to thank everyone for all the donations we have received. If you could help again it would be greatly appreciated.

Jack is an inspiration to our handicap students. When they come out every week to our Special-Needs riding program, they want to see Jack. The parents of these children have told us how seeing Jack go from a disabled horse to now being whole inspires their children. We will update you again after we find out what the Vet's decide after evaluating the latest blood test.

Thanks for caring about Jack.
